governmental system. In the beginning, it was a Theocracy, a government
directed by God; heavily utilizing the offices of prophets and priests.
However, after the book of Judges, a monarchy was instituted, as Israel
desired a king and God had someone in mind.

In the book of 1 Samuel, the offices of prophet, priest and king are all
mentioned in successive, controversial, and even Messianic terms.

Samuel
was called to be a prophet of God during a very dark time in Israel’s
history, and faced some very harsh assignments of rebuking priests and
kings. Saul was anointed Israel’s first king, but failed to obey and
stay within the boundaries of his kingship and thus forfeited his
throne. And then there was David, “a man after God’s heart” who was a
valiant warrior, anointed leader, and found within the Messiah’s own
family line. However, this proves to only be a snapshot of Israel’s
history under a monarchy. The books of 2 Samuel, and 1 and 2 Kings also
depict life within this system, with all its ups and downs.
